The Economist, a London-based news magazine that has reported on international business and politics since 1843, ends each year with a double issue summarizing major events and identifying subjects of significance for the year to come.
In the special year-end issue for 2006, this eminently respectable, conservative magazine ran a piece called “Nature’s Fury: A rising tide of natural disasters” which found that the number of such disasters has increased sixtyfold, steadily rising from the 73 disasters that occurred in the decade 1900-1909 to the 4,650 that happened in the decade 1990-1999.
