(John Heilprin - Sapa/AP) from United States of America.

Washington - The Earth is the hottest it has been in at least 400 years, perhaps even longer.

The National Academy of Sciences, reaching that conclusion in a broad review of scientific work requested by Congress, reported on Thursday that the "recent warmth is unprecedented for at least the last 400 years and potentially the last several millennia."

A panel of top climate scientists told lawmakers that the Earth is running a fever and that "human activities are responsible for much of the recent warming."

Their 155-page report said average global surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere rose about 1 degree Fahrenheit (about half a degree Celsius) during the 20th century.

The report was requested in November by the...

Rough Translation
What happens when meteorite collide with each other? We tried to find the answers: Simulation Experiment. We presumed that the collision happened with the earth in order for lucid distance and location. The diameter of the meteorite is slightly bigger than the breadth of Honshu Japan. The collision point is located at the 3,000km south from Japan in the ocean. The velocity of the meteorite is 70,000km/h. But the meteorite is bigger than we can imagine, so that it appears much slower. In the impact at the same time as colliding. The...

(TheStar.com.my) from Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - About 100 residents fled from a Philippine farming village after hearing boulders and rocks rumbling down restive Mount Bulusan amid heavy rains from a tropical storm, an official said Sunday.

Army and government trucks helped the residents flee from Cogon village below Bulusan. No one was injured and no houses were damaged by the mudflow and boulders _ some as big as a car _ that tumbled down the volcano late Saturday, said Mayor Lilia Gonzales of Irosin town, where Cogon is located.

The boulders and rocks _ ejected during Bulusan's previous ash expulsions _ were washed down the volcano by the heavy rains, Gonzales said.

"The villagers heard the rocks cascading down Bulusan and they ran for their lives thinking they...

(Bloomberg.com) from Indonesia.

June 23 (Bloomberg) -- Bird flu was spread directly between members of an Indonesian family in the first laboratory-confirmed case of human-to-human transmission of the lethal virus, a World Health Organization official said. Genetic sequencing of a virus sample taken from a 10-year- old boy who died from the H5N1 avian influenza strain showed a minute change that was also found in a virus sample taken from his father, who later died from the virus, said Dick Thompson, a spokesman for the United Nations health agency in Geneva. "We have seen a genetic change that confirms in a laboratory that the virus has moved from one human to another,'' Thompson said in an interview. The change in the virus ``doesn't seem to have any significance in terms...

(Sapa-AP) from United States of America.

Lakeland, Florida - Two giant sinkholes almost completely drained a lake, leaving dead fish rotting on oozing mud flats and alligators and snapping turtles fighting for their lives.

Scott Lake began draining last week, and the larger of the two sinkholes grew this week to at least 60m wide and five metres deep, claiming a dock, concrete walkway and chain-link fence.

"It's heartbreaking," said Linda Logan, a member of a local homeowners' association.

The 291-acre natural lake is owned by the surrounding homeowners south of Lakeland, 50km east of Tampa. Residents formed a committee to figure out what to do.

The lake could be restored. If the sinkholes are filled in, rain and runoff would refill the lake, but that could take years, and...

(GulfNews.com).

Rome: An underwater volcano with a base larger than Washington DC has been discovered just off the shores of Sicily, a scientist with Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology said.

The volcanic structure, which incorporates peaks previously thought to be separate volcanoes, was named Empedocles after the Greek philosopher who named the four classic elements of earth, air, fire and water.

Legend has it that the philosopher died by throwing himself into Mount Etna, the nearby Sicilian volcano.

Giovanni Lanzafame, who works at the institute and led the research, said Empedocles was at least 400 metres high taller than the Eiffel Tower.

He said the base of the structure was 30 km long and 25 km wide, spanning an area larger than the...

(Jaime Pilapil - Manilla Times) from Philippines.

FOUR volcanos either spewed steam and ash or recorded high-frequency earthquakes yesterday, prompting scientists to say that three of them could erupt in coming days.

Seismologists detected two high-frequency earthquakes around Bulusan in Sorsogon. But they said its steaming activity was weak to moderate, with the highest reaching 150 meters before drifting northwest.

Mt. Kanlaon’s ejection of steam and ash happened between 5:25 and 5:40 a.m., and the steam rose as high as 800 meters above the crater before drifting southwest.

Seismologists detected 11 high-frequency earthquakes on Taal Volcano, which ejected steam that rose about 10 meters high.

Mayon Volcano had 12 high-frequency and 17 low-frequency jolts, and its steaming activity was...
