Magnitude 6.8 Quake Hits Papua New Guinea, May Cause Tsunami

(Bloomberg) -- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near the island of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, with authorities warning a local tsunami may result. The temblor hit about 62 kilometers (39 miles) south of Arawa, on Bougainville at about 8:19 p.m. local time, the U.S. Geological Survey said in an e-mailed advisory. The tremor was about 130 kilometers west of Choiseul island, in the Solomons. ``Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter,'' the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Hawaii, said in an e-mailed advisory. ``No destructive Pacific-wide tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.''...
