Global warming near crisis point

THE Earth is getting close to its hottest temperature for a million years, say NASA scientists. It is on course to hit that million-year high in less than 50 years.
Global temperatures are about one degree Celsius below that level. But the Earth is warming at the rate of 0.2 degrees Celsius a decade.
Rapid heating over the last 30 years means it is warmer than at any time since the last Ice Age 12,000 years ago.
The new study is led by James Hansen,of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, one of the first whistle-blowers on global warming.
The fastest change is happening at high latitudes in the northern hemisphere.
