Researchers detecting more Lake County quakes

A flurry of small earthquakes in the vicinity of Lake County during the last seven months has seismologists keeping an eye on Northeast Ohio.

The Ohio Seismic Network has recorded 12 quakes or aftershocks there since the beginning of the year. Most originated in the same general area beneath Lake Erie, several miles offshore.

Residents from Painesville, Mentor, Mentor-on-the-Lake, Willoughby and Eastlake have reported feeling the temblors, although they've caused no significant damage.

The largest was a magnitude 3.8 the night of June 20. Most were smaller than magnitude 2.5, which means people would have difficulty feeling them, although instruments recorded the rumble.
