Minor damage in Beijing-area quake

Beijing (dpa) - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook a large area of northern China close to the cities of Beijing and Tianjin on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage.

Government seismologists measured the quake at 5.1 on the Richter scale and pinpointed its epicentre in Hebei province, which surrounds the two cities, state television said.

The earthquake damaged some buildings and roads, but local officials on Tuesday evening said they were still not authorised to release details of the damage.

It also caused furniture and walls to move inside some of the Chinese capital's hundreds of high-rise buildings and was also felt in Tianjin.
