Villagers ignore warnings and return to homes around rumbling volcano

Hundreds of farmers returned to the slopes of a rumbling Java volcano Friday as worries over their crops and livestock outweighed fear of an eruption.
Mount Merapi has been threatening to erupt for more than a month, as clouds of steam, grey ash and sometimes hot lava pour out of the volcano's caldera.
People living near the volcano on Java were put on red alert May 13 and then again this week after the volcano spewed out clouds of ash and steam in the largest eruption to date.
Officials say more than 18,000 people have left their homes, while 11,500 have been evacuated from homes on the mountain's western flank.
