Storms trigger floods, deaths in south China

THE heaviest rain in the past 50 years has killed at least 14 people in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region since Thursday and caused 100,000 to flee their homes, emergency management officials said yesterday.
The storms also injured 27 and triggered more than 2,200 landslides in the region.
Meanwhile, rescuers in Fujian Province last night were expected to finish repairs to a railway destroyed by flash floods, and Zhejiang Province authorities were trying to find seven men who were tossed into a river during a storm.
Persistent downpours have swept south China's Fujian, Guangxi, Guangdong and Guizhou and east China's Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces since late May.
