Lahar flows threaten Sorsogon towns

SORSOGON CITY—Lahar and other volcanic debris cascaded down the slopes of Mt. Bulusan yesterday after heavy rain, sending residents in Casiguran and Irosin to flee to higher ground, officials said yesterday.

“A resident who fled to an evacuation camp told social workers that the mudflow sounded like giant rocks rolling down,” one official said.

He said the mud and ash falling down Bulusan threatened rivers and river channels at the foot of the mountain.

The lahar flow came after another ash explosion took place on the volcano’s northern summit at 8:13 p.m. Tuesday.

The Office of Civil Defense said 180 families or 1,377 people were now in evacuation camps in Casiguran, Juban and Irosin.
