Rescuers dug through volcanic rock and sand today hoping to reach two people trapped in an emergency bunker after Indonesia's Mount Merapi spewed out clouds of ash and debris.
"We don't know if they're alive, we have to dig," said Suryadi, a local official.
The pair ran into the emergency shelter when Merapi emitted a burning cloud that reached seven kilometres down its south-eastern slopes yesterday, sparking panic among residents in the nearest village of Kepuharjo.
