(Ker Than - SPACE.com).
Relatively calm weather was the standard forecast for the Sun, which is near the end of another 11-year solar cycle, but raging solar storms just spotted at its south pole now tell a different story.
At the start of a solar cycle, sunspots-regions on the Sun marked by cooler temperatures and intense magnetic activity-tend to appear near the poles and move towards the equator as the cycle concludes.
Scientists were therefore surprised when Ulysses [image], a joint European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA spacecraft currently embarking on its third tour around the Sun [image] since launch in 1990, spotted intense solar storms near the Sun's south pole.
Solar storms are energetic explosions on the surface of the Sun caused by solar flares or coronal mass...

(Mail & Guardian) from Indonesia.
A powerful earthquake in north-eastern Indonesia triggered a tsunami warning on Tuesday and caused panicked residents to flee shaking buildings, officials and media reports said. The tsunami warning was later cancelled.
The United States Geological Survey initially put the temblor's magnitude at 6,9, but later revised it to 6,5. The quake struck 210km from Ternate, the capital of the Maluku islands, at a depth of 31km.
"We've cancelled the tsunami warning, and there have been no reports of damage or injuries from the earthquake," said Budi Waluyo, a meteorologist at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency in Jakarta.
The temblor hit at 5.04pm local time. Frightened residents fled their homes and at least one hotel in Ternate was evacuated, El...

(Jerusalem Post).
An Egyptian woman died Friday of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, bringing the number of deaths in the country to 13, while a boy in the country's north tested positive for the disease, a World Health Organization official here said.
Nadia Abdel Hafez, a 37-year-old housewife from the oasis town of Fayoum, had been admitted to a local clinic on Monday.
After tests revealed the H5N1 virus, Abdel Hafez was transferred to a hospital in Cairo, some 70 kilometers (45 miles) to the north, where her condition was initially reported as stable.
But she died in the early hours of Friday, WHO spokesman Ibrahim el-Kardani said. Meanwhile, a boy from the northern Nile Delta province of el-Sharqiya tested positive for the avian influenza strain, Egypt's 22nd case so far,...

(NASA).
Picture this: The year is 2025 and you're on the moon. "Home" is 100 meters away—an outpost on the rim of Shackleton Crater. NASA started building it five years earlier, and it is growing fast. You're one of the construction workers.
As always in these polar regions, the sun hangs low, barely above the craggy lunar horizon. You adjust your visor. It amazes you how bright a low sun can be when there's no atmosphere to dim it.
Suddenly, the lights go out.
Up in the sky, a big black disk covers the sun. A red "ring of fire" appears where the sun was only moments before, and its glow turns the ground red beneath your feet.
You've been waiting for this. It's an eclipse.
Astronauts on the moon are going to...
